Below is an idea of what a typical week looks like in Portugal for our guests. Each week caters for any ability level of triathlete.
Tri Training Harder has private use of two 50 metre lanes and a number of 25 metre lanes in the Quarteira swimming pool, only a ten minute ride from our accommodation options. As well as allowing guests to enjoy a spacious, professional standard swimming pool, it provides the perfect setting to film swim videos for coaching analysis.
With 200km coastline, the Algarve boasts ideal locations for open-water swimming. Just a ten minute ride from our accommodation options, Tri Training Harder have found a beach which offers a perfect location for point-to-point swims, race-start simulation or getting into the sea for your first time and learning how to overcome the fear.
The cycling around Vilamoura is spectacular; only minutes away from hundreds of miles of picturesque countryside roads and breath-taking mountain ranges. The memory of the cold British winter gets rapidly forgotten by the end of the first introductory ride. Every ride is fully guided to ensure all athletes get the most out of their time with us.
The vast range of steady, quiet back roads, savage mountain climbs and hair-raising technical descents makes for a varied and enjoyable cycling experience that won’t be forgotten in a hurry. The orange groves, lemon and olive trees, dry stone walls and an abundance of wild flowers give way to jagged coastal cliffs or steep tree-lined mountains with impressive views.
Around Vilamoura, there are many quiet roads, perfect for technique work: cornering and pack riding; ideal for beginners as well as for experienced riders.
A pinnacle for many is the Sunday long ride, with routes of varying distance and gradients to be appropriately challenging for all. Amongst them is the 140-185km Monchique ride which includes up to 2000m of climbing concluding with a 7.2km time trial to the highest point in the Algarve. A favourite with our coaches and the race team, this ride delves right into the heart of the rural Algarve, with coffee and cake stops aplenty.
We have routes to suit any degree of skill and fitness, with rides ranging from easy, flat and fast, to steep, hilly and challenging. The roads in the Algarve are well maintained allowing for a smooth ride, and the temperature often allows for cycling in short sleeves even in January!
Although we don’t offer mountain biking within Tri Training Harder holidays, we can put you in touch with people who will lead you on some fantastic off-road routes right into the mountains if that is more your cup of tea.
The combination of quiet local roads and stunning countryside means you are never short of places to explore by foot. There is a great mix of cross country and roads running around the local area that is easily accessible.
To introduce you to the area and ease of your legs after the flight, we exploit the proximity of the nature reserve and the flat purpose-built running sections of the local roads, for bas runs of varying distances.
Vilamoura has a state-of-the-art 400m 8-lane running track (located next door to the 50m swimming pool) which Tri Training Harder utilises for track sessions looking at speed work and running drills.
Run Video analysis and the related drills can be put into practice on the cross country course, built for the 2000 IAAF World Championships. 2km of carefully sculpted track, with ascents and descents, through trees; running here develops skills for different terrain as well as building fitness.
Relaying it back to the sport, we ensure you get used to the feeling of running of the bike. We lead a short brick run after every long ride to get legs accustomed to transitioning from bike to run. In addition to this included in the training plan is a brick session (bike-run-bike-run); a great favourite with guests old and new.
If all that wasn’t enough, there is also the option to run along the golden beaches as the sun comes up, or be challenged with a hill rep session on the sand dunes.
Arguably the most important aspect of training is recovery, to ensure the athlete’s body is ready and feeling strong for the next session. At Tri Training Harder, recovery can be in the form of lounging in the sun by any one of the on-site pools or using the steam room, sauna, hot tubs and hydrotherapy showers in the 5-star luxury spa at the Tivoli Hotel. Not to forget the excellent aid to recovery provided by Scott and Lynn's nutritious meals, designed with the aid of Bosworth Clinic's sports nutritionist, Helen Money, to complement the training load of the week.
Tri Training Harder are working to develop a fresh take on coaching. Each of the highly qualified and experienced coaches is dedicated to helping the athlete achieve their goal whether that’s kick-starting a training regime, completing their first triathlon or getting on that podium at their next IRONMAN® race. Maintaining an athlete-centred approach is very important and the coaches at Tri Training Harder pride themselves on this. One of the elements which Tri Training Harder believe sets us apart from other coaching companies is the consistency between all of our coaches. This is particularly important during the training holidays in the Algarve as it allows athletes to receive coherent and dependable guidance when being coached by any member of the team. The coaches enjoy continually discussing and analysing different theories and ways to coach, ensuring that they are all aware of each other’s ideas and progress forward as a team to provide an unrivalled coaching service to athletes of all abilities.
While staying on a Tri Training Harder training holiday, athletes are offered the opportunity to take part in a number of coached sessions each day. Every session is optional but the schedule has been constructed so that athletes have a sensible balance of hard training and recovery time. Coaches lead every session and work with the individual athlete to improve their technique, build fitness and gain confidence for the season ahead. HD swim and run video analysis takes place at the start of each athlete’s stay. A seminar on swimming and running technique by one of the head coaches is followed by individual analysis and the areas noted in these tutorials are translated and worked upon for the remainder of the week. The aim is to help athletes identify problem areas and teach them to self-coach to avoid injury, train efficiently and reduce race time. People of all ages and abilities enjoy holidays with Tri Training Harder. Athletes wishing for an excellent training location and for like-minded athletes to train with are welcome, and are free to follow their own training plans if they do not wish to be coached. Similarly people who are new to sport, and want to get fit and learn a new skill can come and enjoy the spectacular location and be guided throughout their stay.
